Advantages & Disadvantages of Instant messaging in Business

In this blog, I am going to cover a couple of advantages and disadvantages of instant messaging in business/workplace. One of the biggest advantages of instant messaging is that it is very cost saving. Instant messaging cuts down traveling costs since all you need a phone or a computer to connect with people. You no longer have travel to other countries or even within the country to have a face to face conversation with them. Another great advantage is that instant messaging is as convenient as it can possibly get. You can literally be halfway across the world, as long as you have a phone/computer you can connect with coworkers right on your screen. Being on the phone with somebody can take your mind away from what you are doing, where as you can just shoot a quick message making it very brief and less distracting also for the person you want to talk to.

One of the disadvantages of instant messaging in the workplace is viruses. A lot of instant messaging apps/sites have adds which are very likely to be spams. E-mail has been one of the biggest ways for spams to get around. I myself receive a lot of spams on email, in the junk folder and some other folders as well. Secondly, sensitive information is another disadvantage. How many times have we heard about people’s Facebook or e-mail account getting hacked? It has ben declining as security has increased but hacking still does take place. This could leak a lot of information about the companies current and upcoming projects.
